Mary Lou Retton


Mary Lou Retton is a retired American gymnast. At the 1984 Summer Olympics, she won a gold medal in the individual allaround competition, as well as two silver medals and two bronze medals. Her performance made her one of the most popular athletes in the United States.

Retton was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, of Italian heritage . Her father, Ronnie, operated a coalindustry transportation equipment business. She attended Fairmont Senior High School, but did not graduate. She competed in the 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles, California during her sophomore year of high school. She is a devout Baptist.
